USS Sable
The USS Sable was the second of the "Great Lakes Aircraft Carriers". USS Wolverine was commissioned first. Like the Wolverine the Sable was a paddlewheel steamer, though a decade newer and 30 feet longer than the steamer used to create Wolverine, with the Sable evolving from the S.S. Greater Buffalo.
Because of the Greater Buffalo's larger size the US Navy was able to make the flight deck longer than the Wolverine's and include features such as a crane to recover and handle aircraft damaged during the process of training naval aviators on carrier landings. By May 22, 1943 the conversion process was complete and the USS Sable departed Buffalo, arriving in Chicago, Illinois on May 26, 1943.Following World War II's end Sable was decommissioned on November 7, 1945 and sold for scrap on July 7, 1948.
