Description:
“Death Block Cellars”. Located in Block 11 of the Auschwitz camp this was a prison within a prison. In September 1941 experiments involving the use of Cyclon B poison gas and the mass killing of humans were conducted here. 600 Soviet prisoners of war and 250 sick prisoners from the camp hospital were killed in these experiments. Other prisoners were starved to death in these cells and the cellar was also the scene of horrific interrogations. (Picture taken by Steven Mercatante on September 5, 2014).
